History

Curriculum Intent

At Parsonage Farm we aim to deliver a high-quality history education that enables pupils to think, act and talk like historians. Our intent is to develop both the disciplinary knowledge and the substantive knowledge required for a rich understanding of Britain’s past and the wider world. We want every pupil to experience history as an active, engaging subject that builds curiosity, cultural capital and a secure sense of chronology.

Key aims

Develop historians: Pupils learn to ask questions, analyse primary and secondary sources, weigh evidence and construct well-founded conclusions.

Build substantive knowledge: Each unit gives pupils coherent factual knowledge about specific periods, societies and themes.

Secure chronological understanding: Topics are taught in chronological order to help pupils place events and developments on a coherent timeline. World history is introduced progressively, with wider global perspectives becoming a focus in upper Key Stage 2.

Local Study: Pupils study the history of Rainham and Parsonage Farm meaningful links between the past and the present.

Engage every learner: Action-packed themed days, practical activities and multi-sensory approaches ensure history is accessible and loved by pupils of all abilities and needs.

Broaden Key Vocabulary in Topics: We explicitly teach historical vocabulary and enquiry skills so pupils can communicate their understanding confidently, encouraging pupils to collate their own vocabulary bank.
