Curriculum Intent
Mathematics sparks curiosity, sharpens thinking and builds resilience. It empowers children to think independently, tackle complex problems and make confident decisions.
At Parsonage, and in line with the White Rose Maths scheme of learning, we are committed to developing resilient mathematicians who enjoy the challenge of problem-solving and understand the relevance of mathematics in everyday life. We deliver engaging, inclusive and accessible lessons that help children not only learn how to solve problems, but also understand the ‘why’ behind the methods.
We develop pupils’ understanding of mathematics through a carefully sequenced, small-steps approach. We help pupils build fluency in key number facts and procedures. We also guide them to reason mathematically by making connections and explaining their thinking. Our curriculum ensures coherence and progression, with each new concept building on prior learning.
We believe that every child can achieve in mathematics and our carefully sequenced teaching allows them to explore concepts using concrete, pictorial and abstract representations, developing deep conceptual understanding before progressing to procedural fluency (first learn the why, then practice the how).
Times tables are a key part of mathematics, providing a foundation for quick and accurate calculations. Fluency in times tables supports problem-solving, reasoning and understanding more complex concepts in mathematics. Our children enjoy practising their times tables, using the Times Tables Rock Stars programme.
