Curriculum Intent
At Parsonage Farm Primary School, we are committed to inspiring a lifelong love of learning and nurturing an inquisitive approach to the world around us. Our Science curriculum is carefully designed to provide full coverage of the National Curriculum while deepening pupils’ understanding of the natural world and encouraging curiosity through ‘working scientifically’.
Through engaging, hands-on experiences, children develop key enquiry skills including observing over time, carrying out research, identifying patterns and conducting simple experiments. We provide a stimulating, accessible and inclusive learning environment where all pupils can strengthen their understanding across the three main scientific disciplines: Biology, Chemistry and Physics.
We promote high standards of achievement in Science by:
- Encouraging children to explore their local environment and school grounds, including growing plants and observing the natural world first-hand.
- Developing strong questioning skills and a resilient attitude towards problem-solving and scientific enquiry, enabling pupils to become independent thinkers.
- Supporting children to see themselves as Scientists of the future and to recognise the positive impact they can have on the world.
- Providing opportunities for pupils to design their own experiments, consider variables and understand what makes an investigation a ‘fair test’.
- Teaching and reinforcing ambitious scientific vocabulary to deepen understanding and improve communication.
- Helping pupils identify reliable sources for research, collaborate effectively with peers and confidently share their findings verbally.
- Learning about influential Scientists, past and present and understanding their contributions to the world to inspire future innovation.
- Making meaningful cross-curricular links to strengthen learning across subjects.
Through these approaches, we aim to equip our children with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to explore, question and understand the world around them.
