Curriculum Intent

The sheer joy of music making can feed the soul of a school community, enriching each student while strengthening the shared bonds of support and trust which make a great school.’

Model Music Curriculum (DfE, 2021)

At Parsonage Farm Primary School, our music curriculum aims to provide every child with high-quality music experiences that engage, inspire, and foster a lifelong love and appreciation of music. We provide a broad and engaging curriculum that develops pupils’ musical skills, vocabulary, and creativity. Through listening, performing, composing, and appraising, children explore diverse musical styles and cultures, reflecting our school's inclusivity. We aim to nurture confidence, self-expression, and collaboration while ensuring pupils develop an understanding of the interrelated dimensions of music. Sparkyard Music Curriculum helps us support these key elements through its skills based approach to form the foundation of our music curriculum. We create opportunities to enhance pupils' musical experiences further through regularly KS1 singing assemblies as well as opportunities to participate in local music festivals. We believe these opportunities help develop musicianship, ensemble skills, as well as support performance confidence.

We aim to develop all children’s practical skills while giving them access to a broad range of instruments and musical experiences. Through our curriculum, pupils explore and appreciate a diverse range of musical styles, cultures, and traditions, enabling them to develop confidence, collaboration skills, and a deeper understanding of music as a universal language. This is supported with our ‘Musician of the Month’ where children are able to explore a culture of musical appreciation and understanding.

iRock

We are visited most Friday afternoons by our iRock band coach which is a fee-paying 30 minute music lesson.  The iRock programme is designed to be totally inclusive; children can join regardless of their musical experience or ability.  All instruments are provided, providing an enriching opportunity that takes the pressure off families.  Every week one of our expert band coaches will lead a 30 minute session that happens during the school day.  Rehearsals are always fun, exciting a highlight of the school week.

Through consistent band practice, the children develop real-life skills including collaboration, listening, patience, teamwork and initiative.  Children in Year 2, 4 and 6 will be able to achieve an entry level qualification with iRock without the anxiety of a formal exam. RSL awards are internationally recognised and an asset to your child’s musical journey.

In 2024, we saw a 99% pass rate across all RSL entrants.
